Maori wisdom

morning breaks at the maori marae

He aha te mea nui o te ao?

He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!

What is the most important thing in the world?

It is people! It is people! It is people!

Whakatauki (Maori proverbs), like this one, are sayings that reflect thoughts, values and advice of past generations.

I had the opportunity to stay overnight on a Maori marae (communal or sacred place) in Rotorua and spent some time with the beautiful people there. It was a night of listening, learning and experiencing. Out of respect, we were asked not to share photos of the inside of the building socially, but I can tell you that it was beautiful and steeped in history, sacredness, myth and community. We spoke into the early hours of the morning about the Maori way of life, community and legends. It was one of my magical experiences in New Zealand.

Take a moment today to be grateful to the special people that are important to you in your life. New and old friends, those passed on and those yet to come. And especially those that bring us our lessons.

I did!

Breathe. Feel. And be grateful.

Gratitude to each and every one of you for sharing my journey with me.

Carpe diem! Take your moment now.

simply sharing, Delicia

  2. This post reminded me the great value of community. Nowadays we are spending too much time running and miss the opportunity to really live with the community, share our experiences, exchange our services. When I was a child I spent my time within the neighborhood and at the parish house, learnt to appreciate and share what I have, and established heart connections that supported me throughout life.

Your experience at the Maori marae must have been very very special. Thank you for bringing the energy of it into this space so that we can also be grateful to people that are important to us. Thank you for being in my life Delicia, always bringing so much love.

    • Dear Annalisa,

You have again reminded me of how community has always impacted my life too. I lived on a communal farm for a year and it was one of those life-changing experiences for me. Not only did I learn about karate, shiatsu and other forms of healing, but I also learnt more about life, people, living in community and of course, about myself too. It was a very special time in my life. As are all the times! Life really is a very special gift to each and everyone of us.

Thank you for bringing that memory back to me today and for sharing your community experience. 🙂 It must have been really special too.

I must add again that my Maori marae experience was definitely one of my highlights of my trip to New Zealand.

Gratitude, love and light to you!
